A gradual but steady recovery: What real-time indicators say #3
Containment measures have now been partially lifted in all European countries. Nevertheless, the recovery remains relatively muted in Europe and in France. Many restrictions (at least until June 2 nd in France) are still in place (restaurants and bars are closed in most countries, as well as entertainment venues, parks and gardens in Paris…). On-site work is gradually resuming (mobility indices available until 16 May, traffic congestion) but shows continuing disparities between countries (comparison of traffic between Berlin, Madrid and Paris). At the same time, bike rides in Paris (which we add to our data base) have immediately returned to levels similar to the pre-confinement period , while online entertainment platforms are losing momentum (as well as the time spent watching TV in France). It is important to specify the temperature effect that pushed down electricity consumption for this year, in comparison with 2019, particularly in France and in Germany. While travel s within the European Union can restart again , the slow recovery of activity is expected to last, at least until the summer. Indeed, the restriction of travel abroad as well as the mandatory sanitary rules in transport will restrain travel and tourist activities in a considerable way in the coming months.
