A week full of events

Editorial The coming week will be full of events that may sustain financial markets volatility somewhat at year-end. We will perhaps see a more significant reduction (not to say an unwinding) of the uncertainties that have dominated the markets in 2019. In the United Kingdom, the elections on 12 December could result in a victory for the Conservative party and the official UK exit from the European Union in end-January. Before 15 December, the United States is expected to announce whether or not it intends to raise its tariffs on $156bn of Chinese products. A status quo would be positive for the markets. Lastly, there will be monetary meetings at the ECB and the Fed. In particular, we will monitor the tone of Fed’s statement as well as the first Governing Council meeting led by Christine Lagarde, and her possible comments on her strategy review.
