Chile: The Times They Are a-Changin’

This note takes a longer view on the Chilean economy and asks the following questions: What is the outlook of the Chilean economy ten years from now? What are the real risks to a potential change in economic policy? We try to filter out the hype from news reports and the overreaction of markets to provide a view for investors in Chile with very long investment horizons. The main takeaway in this note is that Chile’s economic policies will likely shift to a Scandinavian model of high-taxes and high-spending. However, such changes will likely be gradual. We are concerned about the moderation of economic growth. We are less concerned about the fiscal position (despite its recent deterioration), given broad agreement across political parties, including on the left, to keep the fiscal anchor.
