Does population ageing explain what sets the German economy apart?

We compare Germany and France. We note: A higher employment rate and a lower unemployment rate in Germany; Weak productivity gains in German industry, despite a much higher degree of industrial automation in Germany than in France; A higher household savings rate in Germany than in France, and a declining public debt ratio in Germany and a rising one in France. These distinguishing features of Germany relative to France may merely stem from the former’s population ageing and, further , the strong perception of it among the German public. If demographics are the explanation behind what sets the German economy apart , then it would be pointless to search for economic explanations or to make a model out of Germany.
