France: Are manufacturing job losses linked to globalisation?

When assessing globalisation, it is often considered that one of its most negative consequences is the loss of manufacturing jobs. In the case of France, we seek to determine to what extent the loss of manufacturing jobs can be blamed on globalisation. We look at: Whether the profile of manufacturing employment and that of the weight of imports from emerging countries are similar; the answer is no; Whether the trend in manufacturing employment is the same in the other OECD countries that have opened up their trade with emerging countries; the answer is no; How much of the loss of manufacturing value added can be attributed to the deterioration in foreign trade with emerging countries; it is only 13%; With which countries France’s foreign trade has deteriorated: it is the euro zone, not the emerging countries. All this leads us to conclude that the opening up of France’s trade with emerging countries explains only a small part of the decline in manufacturing employment in France .
