France does not need more public spending, except in the area of education
Everybody is now aware of the shortcomings of the healthcare system, the education system and the employment support system in France. There will be a temptation and a demand to spend more public money in these areas, especially after the coronavirus crisis. But a comparison of OECD countries shows that the level of public spending in France is not the explanatory factor for these shortcomings in healthcare and employment. The organisation of healthcare and employment policies should therefore be reconsidered before simply increasing public spending. In contrast, there is a significant positive correlation between total public spending on education and the performance of the education system.
