France has created many jobs, which has not improved the political and social situation; why?
The number of jobs created in France has been very large since 2016, and the employment rate has risen sharply. The unemployment rate has been falling , including for the least skilled . The reason why this rate has not been falling faster is that the participation rate has been rising at the same time (the proportion of French people who have entered the labour market has been rising). However, as we can see, political and social tension is not declining, and the popularity of the President of the Republic remains low. How can this be explained when so many jobs have been created? The likely explanation is the nature of job creation. When we look at job creation at a detailed level, we see that in the recent period they have been concentrated both in unsophisticated activities (construction, catering and leisure) and in sophisticated activities (information and communication, scientific and technological activities). The nature of job creation has then contribut ed to the labour market polarisation and to the end of social mobility: the jobs created are primarily unsophisticated jobs with low wages, and the average quality of jobs has deteriorat ed .
