France: Rapid employment growth and rapidly deteriorating foreign trade are signs of Dutch disease

France is now displaying both: Rapid employment growth, with a lack of productivity gains; Rapid deterioration in foreign trade, whether total or in industrial goods. The combination of rapid employment growth and deteriorating foreign trade is a sign of Dutch disease: a shift in the economy from industry to services, normally combined with a decline in the quality of jobs and in the sophistication of the economy.
