Globalisation: Will efficiency outweigh the desire for independence and reindustrialisation?
There is much talk today of deglobalisation and reshoring. This is due in particular to OECD countries' desire for independence, as they no longer want to depend on other countries, emerging countries, for a large number of products. It also stems from the fact that deindustrialisation destroys skilled and well-paid jobs. But from a corporate perspective, globalisation is efficient : it reduces costs and makes it possible to exploit countries’ comparative advantages. What will then prevail, efficiency or the desire for independence and reindustrialisation? When we look at recent developments, we see no sign of de-globalisation or reindustrialisation in OECD countries. For the time being, the efficiency of globalisation therefore prevails.
