How has France’s level of productivity evolved relative to Germany’s?
A majority of the French complain about low wages. Yet France’s average wage has increased faster than per capita productivity. One explanation may be that the level of labour productivity is low in France, hence the low wages. To determine whether this explanation is valid , we compare France and Germany. We then see that the level of productivity is higher in France than in Germany in all sectors: the perceived low level of wages in France does not result from low productivity. Also, as wages have outpaced productivity, wage growth has not actually been abnormally weak in France .
