How is Central Europe doing?
When we look at the situation in Central Europe (CEECs) with and after the COVID crisis, we see two mechanisms that at first sight seem contradictory: The first is negative : the industrial productive specialisation closely linked to the automotive sector; The second is positive : the low level of labour costs, which may attract companies seeking a turnaround in profitability. Which of the two mechanisms will prevail? When we look at recent developments, we see a much better resilience of production, industry, investment and employment in Central European countries relative to euro-zone countries, which shows the importance of the competitive advantage of Central European countries.
