Inflation risks: What differences between the United States and the eurozone?

The trajectory of inflation is one of the uncertainties this autumn. The September PMI surveys showed a further rise in price indices, suggesting a fresh acceleration in inflation in the eurozone, similar to developments observed in the United States. The flash estimate of consumer prices in September reinforced these fears, with the preliminary estimate for inflation in the eurozone hitting 3.4% in September, its highest level since September 2008. In this report, we draw up a list of the factors accelerating inflation in the United States and the eurozone. Beyond common causes, there are still significant differences between the two regions. These differences suggest that, at unchanged fiscal policy, the surge in inflation is more transitory in the eurozone than in the United States.
