Is China heading towards Japan’s model?

China’s economic model can now be thought to be shift ing in the direction of Japan’s. In particular: Population ageing will slow growth: D emand will be stimul ated no longer by private sector borrowing but by public sector borrowing, due to the very high level of private sector (household and corporate) debt; The high level of debt and now rising public debt will force monetary policy to keep interest rates very low, with the resulting risk of asset price bubbles; The growing use of savings to finance fiscal deficits and public infrastructure investment will also contribute to reducing potential growth.
