Is it better to have a large industry or a small industry?

We will start with the comparison between France and Germany. It is traditionally believed that Germany has an advantage over France, given the far higher weight of its industry. But currently, we see that French growth is resilient to the industrial recession thanks to the low weight of industry in France. So what is better: a large industry (Germany) or a small industry (France)? The answer is quite obvious: a large industry is best , provided that it has the right specialisation. Today, we can compare Germany's unfavourable specialisation (cars, chemicals, capital goods) and France’s favourable specialisation (aeronautics-space, pharmaceuticals, luxury). This means that in the recent period, industrial production capacity has been growing in France and declining in Germany.
