No second wave on the horizon, activity recovers: What real-time indicators say #4

Good news for European countries: the gradual decontainment ha s not yet led to a second wave of contamination. It is in this context that activity recovers and that the restrictions of sanitary measures are gradually lifted. In metropolitan France, this Tuesday, June 2, marks a new stage of decontainment with the reopening of almost all activities (outside Ile de France where stricter rules will continue to apply until Monday, June 22) and the end of the travel limit within 100km. Overall, sanitary conditions are gradually improving everywhere: Spain, for example, did not report any new coronavirus related deaths on Monday, June 1. Moreover, the borders between the countries of the European Union should reopen, a priori from Monday, June 15, marking an increasing recovery of economic activity and of the European indices of mobility. This week, we are adding two important indicators to our data base: the restriction index on sanitary containment measures , which, according to the University of Oxford, has declined significantly in all countries since the beginning of May. In addition, we also have a look on the nitrogen dioxide concentration index in major European cities, which unfortunately tends to return to levels close to those before the crisis.
