Population ageing and productivity gains in OECD countries
The link between population ageing and productivity gains in OECD countries can take two forms that work in opposite directions : Labour force ageing normally leads to a decline in productivity gains; But the lower growth or the decline in the labour force may drive companies t o increase their investments to substitute capital for labour, and to thereby increase productivity gains. When comparing OECD countries, we can clearly see these two effects, working in opposite directions, on productivity since 2008.
