Social mobility, inequality, life expectancy and productivity gains
In 2020, the Davos Economic Forum published a social mobility index that measures health, education access, education quality and equity, lifelong learning, technology access, work opportunities, fair wages and working conditions, and social protection and inclusive institutions. The OECD publishes a social mobility index that links social mobility to the elasticity of earnings between fathers and sons. We study the relationships between these two indicators of social mobility and: The skills of the population; Income and wealth inequalities; Life expectancy; Productivity gains. We find that low social mobility is associated with: Low skills in the population; High levels of income and wealth inequality; A lower life expectancy .
