SPAIN: AN UPDATE OF THE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE AFTER THE ELECTORAL CYCLE

Spain completed a long electoral cycle with the European elections, which were held at the same time as regional and municipal elections. After his victory in the early general elections on 28 April, Pedro Sanchez’s Socialist Party confirmed its return to the political forefront at all levels of power. It will now play a n even more prominent role at the European level by becoming the largest party group in the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament. As there is no new election until 2023 , Spain will probably enter now a phase of stabilisation of its political landscape. This calm should enable the country to resume the reform process that political uncertainty had slowed down since 2015.
