The case of Japan puts current concerns into perspective

At first sight, the situation of the Japanese economy could be thought to be catastrophic. But this is not the case: Population ageing has not led to inflation or to a decline in per capita income; The very high level of public debt has not given rise to a debt crisis; The considerable rise in the size of the central bank’s balance sheet and the very low level of interest rates have not given rise to a currency crisis or a financial crisis. This shows that the negative consequences of population ageing and highly expansionary fiscal and monetary policies only really appear, if at all, in the very long term .
