The COVID crisis once again demonstrates companies’ ability to rapidly restore their earnings

The COVID crisis has demonstrated once again that companies have very strong bargaining power relative to that of other economic agents (wage earners, governments, etc.). For instance: Governments have prevented households from losing income and corporate bankruptcies by running huge fiscal deficits; Corporate profitability has picked up very rapidly, thanks to price increases, wage moderation, productivity gains and cost reductions ; Income distribution has skewed further against wage earners. Companies’ determination to restore their profitability very rapidly is therefore a key feature during and after a crisis: it is not companies that are in trouble in the wake of a crisis .
