The effect of policies to push up the employment rate on productivity must not be forgotten: The example of France

The employment rate is low in France, particularly because the employment rates of elderly employees and the low-skilled are low . The effort to push up the employment rate in France should therefore mainly focus on increasing the employment rate of over 55-year olds , low-skilled and young people. One must then take into account the fact that the positive effect of the rise in the employment rate on potential production is partially offset by a negative effect due to the fact that the new jobs (those that correspond to the rise in the employment rate), have low levels of productivity , since they concern elderly employees or young or low-skilled people. Potential production does not increase as much as the rise in the employment rate may suggest.
