The Impact of U.S. Sanctions on Iranian Metal Exports

U.S . President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the U.S. administration would introduce a new set of sanctions on Iranian exports of industrial metals. The executive order issued by president Trump covers iron ore, steel, aluminium and copper exports . Market consensus is that the impact of these sanctions will be limited, with Iranian metal exports relatively minor when taken in context of the global market . However, due to supply disruptions in Q1 of 2019, we argue that both the copper concentrate and iron ore markets could be affected. E ven small disruptions on the supply side are able to support prices with current market conditions extremely delicate . However, in both cases, the impact on the markets mentioned will only be felt if China complies with the sanctions .
