We look at the United States and the euro zone. The prospect of a highly expansionary fiscal policy in the United States has pushed up inflation expectations significantly. This raises the question of the outlook for inflation. In particular: Under what conditions might a fiscal deficit be inflationary? For how long will underemployment keep the inflationary risk at bay? What structural factors may cause inflation in the longer term? What does the example of Japan tell us about the influence of these factors?
