The shortage of engineers is a serious problem

Our starting point is the proportion of engineers and technicians in industry among higher education graduates in OECD countries. We seek to determine whether countries with a low proportion of engineers among new graduates are suffering from a problem of declining manufacturing industry. We find that the weight of manufacturing industry in GDP is strongly correlated with the proportion of engineers among new graduates. Reindustrialisation therefore requires training more engineers.
