The size of finance and the magnitude of recessions

It is quite intuitive to think that the larger the size of finance, the larger the size of recessions. This leads us to examine whether the rise in the size of finance in the United States, the United Kingdom, the euro zone and Japan has been associated with larger falls in activity during recessions since the beginning of the 1980s. We find that the increase in the size of finance has gone hand in hand with an increase in the magnitude of losses of activity during recessions.
