US CPI report: Core inflation levels off in August

Key points: US c onsumer prices increased less than expected in August : +0.2% M/M for total CPI (versus 0.3% expected) and +0.1% for core CPI (versus 0.2% expected) . As a result, i nflation decelerated from 2.9% to 2.7% while core inflation eased from 2.4% to 2.2%. In short, today’s report confirms that inflationary pressures remain in check without much impact from the tightening in the labor market and tariffs so far . Looking forward, even though we see some obvious upside risks on prices (oil prices, further tariffs…) we continue to expect inflation to remain contained throughout the rest of th is year. T his should imply for the Fed to stick to the gradual tightening mantra.
