What accounts for the slowdown in China?
In the recent period, there has been a marked slowdown in a number of demand or production components in China. Is this slowdown due to: Fiscal policy, Monetary policy, The oil price, The exchange rate? Only fiscal policy can play a role. Should we look at structural causes of the slowdown: population ageing, bad use of savings, rapid transition to a service economy? The bad use of savings weakens the Chinese economy structurally, but not cyclically. All things considered, it seems that the slowdown in growth in China is primarily linked to China’s transition to a service economy: it is production of industrial durable goods, daily consumer goods and residential construction that is slowing down.
