What factors are driving the growth recovery in the four large euro-zone countries?

We examine the origin of the growth recovery after the COVID-induced recession in Germany, France, Spain and Italy. It is important to understand what sets an economic recovery in motion after a recession. The possible “technical” causes of recovery are well known: Upturn in global trade and exports; Increase in real wages or employment; Fall in the household savings rate; Upturn in corporate earnings and investment; Upturn in housing investment; Increase in public spending or tax cuts. But these developments must also be linked to the behaviour of economic agents. We see that the current economic recovery is mainly stemming from: The global economic cycle; The recovery in housing investment; In France and to a lesser extent in Italy, dynamism among companies.
