What if: assessing the growth impact from a hard Brexit on the euro area

La st week’s EU summit in Salzburg was a clear set-back in the Brexit negotiations. While our baseline scenario still assumes that both sides will eventually find an agreement, a disorderly Brexit certainly cannot be ruled out at this stage. The high degree of economic inter-connectedness poses a clear risk to the growth outlook for the euro area in such a scenario. We estimate that a drop in exports to the UK by 50% over a three month period could reduce euro area GDP by around 1%, when taking second round effects on investment spending into account. A complete collapse of exports could push the euro area to the brink of a recession.
