What if the different reactions of inflation in the United States and the euro zone stemmed from the more competitive nature of the goods market in the euro zone?

The United States and the euro zone face the same shocks: a significant rise in the prices of commodities and intermediate consumption, an upturn in demand and hiring difficulties for companies. But this shock has led to a sharp rise in headline and core inflation in the United States and a contained rise in headline inflation with no rise at all in core inflation in the euro zone. Th e wildly different response s of inflation to the same shock may result from the fact that the goods and services market is significantly more competitive in the euro zone than in the United States.
