What impact on mobility? What real time indicators say #16

Beyond the most visible impact in terms of economic catch-up, a number of major changes in people’s mobility need to be looked at closely in order to understand the evolution of economies after the containment period . These consequences in terms of mobility are visible through various high-frequency indicators. This week we are studying new indicators to understand the changes that have taken place with respect to movements of individuals in Europe: First, we look at the Apple Mobility Index , which indicates that cars are more important in the countries most affected by the health crisis , at the expense of walking and public transport. We then focus on mobility developments and the use of bicycles and cars in major European cities and countries . As traffic congestion in Paris reaches a level similar to the 2019 average, the use of bicycles is multiplied by 3 compared to 2019. Finally, global commercial flights , after being particularly restricted during lockdown, ha ve increased slightly and now appear to be stabilizing at just under 70,000 flights , up from over 100,000 before the crisis. The same trend can be observed with the search of the booking website of leisure flights in European countries.
