What is really happening in Germany?

German growth has slowed drastically since the end of 2017 and expected growth in 2019 has become weak (lower than 1%). What are the mechanisms slowing growth in Germany? A restrictive fiscal policy? Yes; Problems in the automotive industry? Yes; A loss of household confidence and an increase in savings? Yes; A fall in corporate profits and investment? No; A fall in competitiveness and a slowdown in exports? Yes. The drastic slowdown in German growth seems to be due to a loss of confidence in Germanyâ€™s industrial growth model.

The risk-on mode is well in place with most equity indices up for 5 consecutive sessions now, volatilities (implied and realized) and credit spreads flattish at low levels. Our Risk Perception Index is stuck in the 20%-zone since early September now. Gold remains the invariant with another weekly gain (+2.7%) and all-time high (>3860 $/oz).The equity/bond correlation was positive this week with equities up and bond yields down globally as crude oil sinks (Brent -8% wtd).
