What is the true domestic inflation rate in the euro zone?
Inflation measured by consumer prices is a biased indicator of inflation, because consumer prices are influenced by import prices. To measure true domestic inflation, it is better to look at the GDP deflator, which reflects domestic inflation. Especially for manufactured products, the value added deflator can be very different from the consumer price index. We see that: In the fourth quarter 2023, inflation measured by GDP deflator growth was 5.3%; In the same quarter, inflation measured by consumer price growth was 2.7%.
