What message is sent by the formation of the Asia-Pacific free-trade area?
The creation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in Asia brings together 15 countries 1 that will reduce their tariffs, open up their services and set common trade rules with one another. Although some areas (agriculture, data, technical standards) are not covered for the time being, the formation of this free-trade area in Asia-Pacific: Will make this region the engine of the global economy; Signals Asia-Pacific’s new growth strategy, which is to grow on the back of regional demand and not by exporting to the United States or Europe; Shows the failure of the United States’ strategy of isolating China.
