Why are companies in OECD countries holding more and more cash?

The stock of cash (liquid and monetary assets) held by non-financial corporations in OECD countries is rising sharply. Why? The following explanations can be considered: The excess of profits over investments; The very low level of interest rates; Uncertainty, fear of funding problems in the future; Expectations of major acquisitions. The ones that seem relevant and consistent with the facts are low interest rates and major acquisitions.
