Why are tensions so high in French society? Are the causes economic?

T ensions have been very high in French society in the past year (yellow vests crisis, protests among the young, healthcare workers, the anti-racism movement, etc.). From a purely economic viewpoint, are these tensions understandable at a time when a number of France’s macroeconomic indicators (income distribution, generosity of social welfare, trends in poverty and inequality) are quite positive? Possible explanations for these tensions include: Problems for young people entering the labour market; Labour market polarisation, which leads to weak social mobility; The efficiency of public spending in many areas; The existence of regions with a very high unemployment rate; High and rising housing costs; The existence of groups of economic agents who are highly vulnerable in the event of a recession (young people, employees on short-term contracts, self-employed , temp workers, etc.).
