PSA Media & Entertainment: Global Video Game Industry Update
The global video games market has improved since the start of the year and 2023 now looks like being an "up" year, after the retrenchment in 2022. However, recent quarterly results suggested Japanese video games companies are struggling to take advantage of this. We look at why conditions are improving, and which Japanese firms are keeping pace and which aren't.
CD Projekt is a holding company of the CD PROJEKT Capital Group which conducts its operations in two activity segments: CD PROJEKT RED and GOG.com. CD PROJEKT RED's activities cover the creation and publication of videogames, licensing the associated distribution rights and manufacturing tie-in products which exploit the commercial appeal of brands owned by Co. The activities of GOG Ltd. involve digital distribution of videogames via Co.'s proprietary GOG.com distribution platform, on the basis of contracts signed by GOG Ltd. with producers, IPR holders and external publishers. The platform enables customers to purchase games, remit payment and download game files to their personal devices.
Electronic Arts develops, markets, publishes and distributes games, content and services that can be played and watched on a variety of platforms, including game consoles, personal computers, and mobile phones. The company markets and sells its games and services through digital distribution channels and through retail channels. Digitally, the company's console games and services can be purchased through third-party storefronts. In its games and services, the company utilizes brands that it either wholly own or license from others. The company develops and publishes games and services across genres. Within and alongside its games, the company provides live services, including in-game purchases, downloadable content, and esports.
Nexon is engaged in the production, development and delivering on-line games. Along with its subsidiaries and affiliates, Co. provides PC online-games and mobile games in Japan, Korea, China, North America and Europe as well as Asian countries. Co.'s principal existing game titles include "MapleStory," "Sudden Attack," "Dungeon & Fighter," "Counter-Strike Online," and "EA SPORTS™ FIFA Online 3." Co. also offers services such as consulting related to PC online-game distribution, in-game advertising, and merchandising incidental to PC online business. As of Dec 31 2017, Co. has 26 consolidated subsidiaries and 14 affiliates.
Sony is engaged in the development, design, production, manufacture, offer and sale of various kinds of electronic equipment, instruments and devices for consumer, professional and industrial markets such as network services, game hardware and software, televisions, audio and video recorders and players, still and video cameras, mobile phones, and semiconductors. Co. is engaged in the development, production, manufacture, and distribution of recorded music and the management and licensing of the words and music of songs as well as the production and distribution of animation titles. Co. is also engaged in the production, acquisition and distribution of motion pictures and television.
