Valens Equity Insights and Inflections - 2021 06 22

Normally, coming out of a recession is a long recovery for airlines. However, JBLU appears to be set up to have a stronger recovery than anyone is expecting, and to see returns jump thanks to smart strategy change it has made. Just 5 years ago, the company saw UAFRS-based (Uniform) ROA double in a year by implementing premium-class offerings on its routes for the first time. Now, it is set to follow that exact same playbook again, but on even more valuable routes this time, as it plans to launch a trans-Atlantic offering. The market isn't pricing it for how this could again transform the company's profitability.

On top of that, management's compensation aligns them to focus on these smart strategies to boost returns while also growing the business. During the most recent earnings call,
management showed confidence about this strategy, and the speed of the recovery the company is seeing in demand, and how that could fuel the business higher.

Considering low market expectations, management's smart strategy shift, favorable management alignment, and positive management outlook, there appears to be equity upside potential for JBLU.

ATVI Q1 2021 Embedded Expectations Analysis – Market expectations are for Uniform ROA to rebound, but management may be concerned about Call of Duty Mobile, investments, and player engagement

XYL Q4 2020 Embedded Expectations Analysis – Market expectations are for Uniform ROA to reach new peaks, but management may have concerns about component shortages, margins, and the Esri partnership

LIN Q1 2021 Embedded Expectations Analysis – Market expectations are for record-high Uniform ROA, but management may have concerns about their pipeline, productivity, and working capital

Valens Research
Valens Research

In 2009, just as the dust was settling from the last major equity and credit market crises, we launched a boutique research firm with the intention of breaking Wall Street’s biases and broken incentives:

  • GAAP and IFRS have failed to provide rules for reliable financial statement reporting
  • Stock analyst recommendations are not grounded in disciplined financial analysis
  • Credit agencies have been set up to grossly fail in their responsibilities to investors and the public markets
  • Utter lack of willingness of major research firms to employ the the most advanced forensic analysis available

We sought to provide investors and company analysts with a source of information that changed all that.
Many years later, our business model remains because little has changed on Wall Street.

  • Corporate credit ratings remain years behind the fundamental underpinnings of company performance
  • Stock analysts continue to make recommendations with deeply inherent biases
  • Research firms have failed to break down the walls between credit, equity, and macroeconomic research
  • The governing accounting bodies have created more leeway for mis-estimates and mis-classifications as financials have become unwieldy and overwhelming

The integrity of Valens Research is founded in our disciplined processes and analytics. No “star” analysts. No corporate advisory relationships. No-nonsense opinions and recommendations.
