Vermilion Int'l Compass: Global Equity Strategy

Buys Within Global Energy, Health Care, and Utilities

Global growth stocks that have significantly outperformed since the October 2023 lows are starting to pull back, and we believe a continued pause/pullback is likely in these growth areas. Meanwhile, we are seeing a clear shift into value and defensives, and we recommend adding exposure to these areas. This type of Sector rotation is common during bull markets, as various areas of the market get their turn to shine.

Reasons We Remain Bullish on Global Equities. Despite recommending adding exposure to defensives, we are not getting bearish. At the same time, we would not expect the rally in global equities to continue at the same rate as we have experienced since the October 2023 lows. We continue to see many reasons to be bullish on global equities, including: (1) major supports continue to hold, including $99 on MSCI ACWI (ACWI-US), 4600 on the S&P 500, 4400 on the EURO STOXX 50, and 2300 on the TOPIX, (2) relative strength is moving sideways for MSCI ACWI defensive Sectors (Consumer Staples and Utilities), (3) the U.S. dollar (DXY) remains in a 2+ month downtrend, and (4) the 10-year Treasury yield remains below resistance at 4.1% and 4.35%. We would only start to get cautious if these trends start to change... see pages 2-3.
Country Overweights. Our current country overweights include Japan, India, Europe, Poland, Greece, Brazil, and Mexico... see page 2.
Actionable Themes: Energy, Health Care, and Utilities. Value and defensives have generally lagged since October 2023 -- and also for the majority of 2023 -- but we are starting to see meaningful price and RS improvement that suggests they will be much more attractive investments in 2024. We highlight actionable ideas within Energy, Health Care (primarily pharmaceuticals), and Utilities -- add exposure... see pages 4-14.
