T-Mobile announced two Fiber JVs this morning. They are acquiring a 50% stake in a JV with Oak Hill Capital which will integrate fiber operators GoNetspeed and Greenlight Networks. They are also acquiring a 50% JV stake with Wren House that owns fiber operator i3 Broadband. All of this is very consistent with TMUS’ fiber convergence approach and quite contrary to reports that TMUS was looking to potentially acquire Uniti. Here, we share the footprint details of the 3 fiber operators and attempt ...
We published our quick take of Verizon’s results yesterday morning. In this note, we discuss 1) postpaid phone net adds; 2) Verizon’s preference for fiber over FWA; 3) the upcoming new ‘value proposition’; 4) whether the wireless industry moves past free phones; and 5) spectrum.
T’s CEO John Stankey, at the earnings call last week, said he did not think T would enter into an MVNO with a satellite company. That answer comes at a time of tremendous investor interest in the SpaceX IPO, for which one of the (many) questions is whether Starlink will augment its US broadband service with an MVNO. At the same time, questions have arisen about SpaceX’s participation in the upcoming FCC spectrum auction. We don’t challenge Stankey’s sincerity but having watched successful effo...

What’s new? Verizon adding positive subscribers in 1Q. That’s kind of the newest thing we’ve seen in a long time. But it came at a price as service revenue missed. FWA and fiber net adds missed suggesting the organization was oriented to achieve a singular goal. How this may evolve this year and in coming years will be a focus.

Nothing we saw in Friday’s results warranted Charter’s 25%+ stock price decline. Charter lost $8BN+ in equity value. Comcast lost nearly $15BN in equity value. Other Cable companies’ stock prices were also meaningfully down. Results alone cannot explain these moves in our view. We think investors are concerned about the long-term pricing power of these businesses after Charter pulled back on their goal to grow broadband ARPU this year. We think some of these concerns are valid, but this certainl...
Charter’s broadband losses were slightly worse than expected. Investors were probably expecting a beat after Comcast results yesterday, but we cautioned against that. Broadband ARPU growth was also weak. The silver lining was that EBITDA was in line. This said, in line isn’t great as consensus currently expects EBITDA to remain flat for the year compared to management’s goal of it growing y/y. On the call, we expect management will reiterate this point. We expect the stock to sell off a bit here...
We shared our view of Comcast’s results this morning. In this note following the earnings call and our follow-up conversations. We address 1) the set up for 2Q; 2) broadband subscriber estimates for 2Q and 2026; 3) the potential for M&A; 4) wireless net adds; 5) wireless financial results; and 6) convergence ARPA and how Comcast can close the gap with competitors.
Comcast results beat estimates almost across the board. The most important metric for the company, broadband subscriber losses, came in substantially better than expected. The changes in pricing and packaging strategy implemented over the last year have clearly had a positive impact. The key question for the call is whether Comcast can continue to deliver strong subscriber results from here. If they can, the stock should rerate upward.

We think AT&T 1Q results released today were fine. Trading in the stock today was volatile but not, in our view, because of results, rather, the reports that TMUS parent DT may be looking to merge the two companies. To what end? Possibly to enlarge the currency, creating a convergence (Cable, UNIT, BSPEED) buyer vs. a seller.
AT&T reported 1Q results that should largely ease concerns about a major sector disruption emerging following the large-scale C-suite changes that unfolded at the end of last year. The company did expend effort to keep expectations in check with the closure and integration of the new Lumen fiber assets mid-quarter. All guidance was reiterated. Importantly, ARPU and subscribers and margins were all in-line to slightly better. This should set up the balance of the sector for few surprises (except ...
