Utilities: December: wind came, water did not

Iberian electricity demand reached 26.7TWh in Dec-17 up 4.1% yoy, while FY17 demand reached 302.4TWh, up 1% vs last year. Avg pool price in December was Eur57.9/MWh (-4% yoy), reaching approx. Eur52.4/MWh in FY17 (+32% vs FY16), impacted by the severe drought in Iberia and some upward pressure in fuel costs (namely coal). Hydro production in Dec-17 reached 2.1TWh (-25% yoy) bringing FY17 Iberian hydro output to 27.9TWh, -50% yoy and 42% below 2012/16 avg - in Portugal, 2017 was one of the four driest years since 1931, while in Spain 2017 Fall was the third driest since 1965. Wind output was very strong in Dec-17, reaching 7.1TWh (+90% yoy), meaning that FY17 wind production in Iberia (59.5TWh) was nearly flat yoy. Thermal gap was down in Dec-17 (9.2TWh, -13% yoy), but still reached approx. 104TWh in FY17, the largest since 2012. FY17 gas demand in Spain was up 9.4%, driven by the 27% increase in gas demand for electricity generation (higher CCGT usage). Weak operating trend should not have changed in December for liberalized Gen&Supply areas of integrated utilities, but companies with higher exposure to wind, like EDPR, Acciona and Saeta should have done well (weakness in hydro should have offset that for EDP and Iberdrola). Enagás should have benefited from strong gas demand.
