Iberian Energy Monthly: September: high(er) Summer end prices

September was (again) characterized by high wholesale prices, with the avg pool price reaching Eur71.4/MWh, +45% yoy. This situation led the Spanish government to announce some measures to try to curb the rise in prices and limit the impacts of high energy costs for consumers, namely the elimination of the 7% generation tax. As for electricity demand, it was up 3.5% yoy to approx. 25TWh, bringing the YTD demand rise to +1.5%. September was a poor month for wind, as 2.8TWh output was down 23% yoy and 18% below the 5Y avg. However, that was compensated by higher hydro (@ 2.7TWh, +69% yoy, 17% above the 5Y avg) and nuclear (5TWh, +6% yoy), meaning that the thermal gap was just 3% higher yoy and, consequently, that higher prices have been driven by higher costs. For 3Q18, the avg pool price was Eur65.8/MWh, up 36% yoy, the highest quarterly price since 2008. Higher input costs have been the main driver of this situation, as coal/gas/CO2 prices registered yoy price increases of 14%/54%/218% in 3Q18. Company wise, September may have been bad for companies with higher thermal exposures (like Naturgy and Endesa), as the time lag effect between higher costs and final client higher selling prices should have taken its toll. Wind players like Acciona and EDPR should also have fared poorly due to low wind resources.
