Russian Oil and Gas. April 2019 - 1Q19 Earnings Season Early Birds

Novatek and Rosneft are set to kick off 1Q19 earnings season in the Russian oil and gas sector. We expect slightly stronger FCF generation for Rosneft and positive one-offs for Novatek. Despite weaker headline oil prices, upstream profitability should be stronger as export duties fell more than the crude price did (the so-called lag effect), with the export crude oil price less base taxes increasing by 13% Q-o-Q. In addition, the cost base was seasonally lower. In the oil sector in particular, FCF generation was also boosted by seasonally lower capex, on our estimates, despite weaker output Q-o-Q. Meanwhile, the very low base in the downstream in 4Q18, as well as the start of recoverable excise compensation for domestic gasoline and diesel sales in January, should support profitability. Novatek will report its 1Q19 IFRS results tomorrow, and the management will hold a conference call on April 26. Rosneft is to release its results on April 30.
